Serving Internet Video across the Pacific

Pacific Internet Exchange, LLC (PIE), located just south of downtown San Francisco, is a managed hosting provider for Asia-centric companies. The company supports mission-critical applications for its customers, such as video, CRM, e-commerce, and cloud computing.

Due to particularly high hosting costs in Japan, PIE has become a leader in hosting Japanese video websites. Its data center serves hundreds of hours of Internet video to Japan daily.

The Need for Speed

As Service Level Agreements (SLAs) became more stringent, PIE felt increasing pressure to provide better network speed, reliability, and resiliency. In order to overcome the lag associated with streaming and downloading video files across the Pacific, the company searched for a way to boost the speed of its connections to provide a better end-user experience.

“Data speeds overseas to Japan are slowed down by congestion going into Japan, like a line forming at customs,” says David Grieshaber, President of PIE. “We realized that we could provide better service to our customers if we had a way to accelerate our Internet connection to Japan.”

“Eight to Ten Times Faster” Improves Business

PIE deployed FastSoft’s E Series, built on award-winning technology developed at California Institute of Technology, to optimize the TCP protocol which controls the large majority of web video. The solution dramatically improved PIE’s data distribution speeds with little configuration and no interruption to service.

According to Grieshaber, “FastSoft gave us a way to speed up our connections without having to reconfigure our network, meaning that end-users in Japan do not need to have a second box, or any software, to receive faster video streams and downloads. The results that we’ve gotten have been amazing. We’re see¬ing our connections to Sapporo increasing by a factor of 30, and into Tokyo speeds are eight to ten times faster. It’s really improved how we do business in our core market.”
